Intro
Native to the Caucasus Mountains in Russia, the Balkar Horse is named for the Karachay-Balkar people. This is not strictly a breed, but rather a variety of Kabarda specifically in Kabardino Balkaria.
Origins
The Kabardan types are all strong animals, created by a harsh climate, they are known for great adaptability. While there are three recognized types within the breed, there are no centralized breeding programs, so conformation even between types will be blurry to some degree. The Balkar rarely found outside of this Russian region.
Basic – The most common type and found in the mountains. This seems to be the Balkar strain.
Desert (‘oriental’) – Carries Arabian influence, breeding a lighter, more agile high energy animal.
Massive – A larger, big-boned type, with trotter or carriage horse influence.
