The sooty gene causes black hairs to grow interspersed in the coat color, generally concentrated along the topline and points. This can be masked by the pinto spotting pattern as can be seen in one of the examples below with a sooty head and white mane. In addition most of the animals pictured below have heavy winter coats, sooty marks can change seasonally.
