Horse Base Coat Colors

All different horse colors that exist stem from the base colors, black, chestnut, bay and brown.
Black BaseBlack
Black varies very little in color, although there is a bit of variation in black coats. Most black breeds come from northern countries.

There are several different red chestnut shades that vary genetically. his color is commonly found in most breeds globally.

Bay baseBay
Common to most breeds, bays have a reddish brown coat with black points, mane and tail. There are two genetic types of bay.

Brown baseBrown
Possibly a type of bay, seal brown is made different by their lightened soft spots. Identifiable by their characteristic light brown muzzle.
