The sooty modifier causes dark hairs to grow interspersed throughout the coat, generally concentrated along the topline and points. This gene is much more obvious and dramatic on a lighter base and commonly found in animals with a cream dilution. Sooty palominos are the result of a cream dilution and a sooty gene on a chestnut base. This is the sooty combination that is perhaps most likely to change seasonally.
