A look at horses with chest shield markings around the world and on a variety of different breeds.
The amazing variety of pinto patterns give us a lot of interesting and unusual markings, both colored and white. Much like the medicine hat or war bonnet face markings, shields come from the spots. Also like the war bonnet, animals with chest shields were prized for their strength in war. A shield marking covers the chest area, but can extend up the neck, around the shoulders or down the front of the legs, but it must be flanked by white.
