The inception of markings, belton or recoloring markings are spots of the base color on pinto pattern white fields. It can be quite striking and spectacular on already interesting patterns and can even look a bit appaloosa. When found in certain patterns, they can also be called pawprints. They can show up all over an animal’s coat and are often found on the face and feet, similar to ermine spots, which are smaller (but may be a result of the same genetics).
