Intro
Not an official breed, the Maremmano Megliorato is a cross of Maremmano and Thoroughbred bloodlines.
Origins
Originating in Tuscany, Italy, during the early 20th century, the name of this breed literally translates to Maremmano Improved. The goal of breeding was to increase the speed and jumping ability of the larger breed. Some warmblood genetics may have been added to improve the notoriously difficult temperament Maremmano animals can display.
Adding Thoroughbred blood can be a blessing and a curse, it will generally produce finer, faster animals. However it seems to frequently affect the robust nature of hardier types. This combination has remained popular enough to continue and today their brave, athletic nature is popular for jumping. To register as breeding stock, stallions must possess good confirmation and pass a jumping test.
