Apennine horse

Intro

Also called Cavallo Appenninico, the Apennine horse is a strain of Frieberg breed, imported to Italy and bred. They can be found in the Apennine Mountains between the milia and Tuscany regions.

Origins

A relatively new breed for the nation, the Apennine breed began late in the 20th century. Frieberg animals were imported from Switzerland and introduced them to land in the hills above Iano. They adapted to the climate incredibly well and the breed grew quickly. An economical breed, they are appreciated for their ability to withstand extreme climates and poor fodder.

They were recognized as a breed in 2010 and according to the DAD-IS they are listed as endangered and as of 2023 there were 722 left.

Traditional Colors

Solid colors, mostly bay, brown or chestnut, sometimes with no white markings at all (called zaino).
