Spiti Pony

Intro

Similar to other breeds or types in the area, the Spiti is a dwarf mountain horse found in the Spiti District from which it takes its name. There are two strains of the breed, pure Spiti and Konimare, which tends to be taller than pure bloods.

Origins

These small horses are maintained by the Kannait community who live in the area and rely on them for riding, pack animals and sporting. Incredibly well suited for the land they occupy, these ponies can carry loads easily on sloping areas and balance on icy ground. Poor feed and extreme climate is part of their existence and has shaped them as a breed. They are grazed in alpine pastures suring the summer and kept inside during harsh winters.
