Intro
The Merak-Saktenpata is a rare breed of ponies native to Bhutan, found primarily in the Trashigang region. They are named for the Merak and Sakten village blocks where they are found.
Origins
There is not much information about the origins of this breed and they are rarely found outside their native region. It seems that in the early 21st century Adarukha disease decimated the horse population in Bhutan. According to the DAD-IS as of 2018 there were less than 300 Merak Saktenpata animals left.
