Intro
Also known as Messara Horse, the Cretan Horse is a light draft horse found in the island of Crete off the coast of Greece.
Origins
They are a mountain-type pony that have been on the island since around the year 1000 and are mostly found on the Mesara plain. This animal was developed in the 17th century by crossing native mares with imported Turkish Arabian stallions. In 1994 a conservation program was started to preserve their bloodlines, at that time there were 182 animals left. Over the next 30 years their numbers fluctuated, at one point falling to 36. Today, according to the DAD-IS they are at risk, but maintained and as of 2021 there were 115 left.
