Intro
There is a bit of controversy surrounding the Donskoi, as some call them an old type of Don horse and others call them a strain of Don. Either way the Donskoi is now considered extinct (whether it was absorbed into the Don or not).
Origins
This breed is said to be incredibly versatile and used by the Cossacks, related to Caucasus and Steppe Horses. Both original groups are hardy animals well suited for harsh weather, difficult geography and poor fodder. In addition their feet were so hard, they didn’t require shoes, even under heavy cavalry loads.
