Intro
Also called West African Dongola, the Djerma Horse is found in Niger and Nigeria in western Africa. They are a light horse type that comes from a cross between the Barb, Dongala and various other local breeds.
Origins
Not officially considered a breed and more commonly known as the West African Dongola, the Djerma horses are sometimes referred to as degenerate Barbs. The study done in 2016 on Nigerian horse breeds did not identify the Djerma as a breed of the country, but their sample was only 31 horses so it’s likely not representative of such a diverse country. Nigeria keeps no central studbooks and from what we can tell Niger doesn’t either, so there is little official information about this breed.
