Intro
The Hucul is a regional type and strains are bred in several countries. Huzule is the Austrian type.
Origins
Of ancient origins, the breed originated in a region of the eastern Carpathians, in what is now Romania. Named for a small tribe named Hutsul who were perhaps the first to discover and domesticate them. The Hutsul lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle and they helped to spread this handsome little horse throughout the Carpathian region. Appreciated for their sure footed nature and hard hooves, this robust breed was versatile enough for riding and light draft.
