Karacabey Nonius Horse

Intro

The Karacabey Nonius Horse is a breed that originated in the Marmara region of Turkey and they were declared extinct in 1970.

Origins

The Karacabey stud was established to breed Karacabey Half Bred Arabian horses for use in competitive equestrian sport. The result was a fine animal, but later found inferior to imported European sport types so breeding was discontinued in 1979.

During that time, the Karacabey Nonius was also established, crossing Karacabey to Anatolian Native and Nonius animals. The result was a slightly larger type, bred specifically for jumping large fences and also useful as a powerful harness horse. Unfortunately, like the Arabian type they were not competitive enough with European stock and breeding was discontinued in 1970. All breeding operations were halted in 1980 and the remaining animals were sold at auction and crossbred until none were left.

Interestingly enough, not long after these breeds vanished, sporting animals came into vogue in a big way and the Turkish officials later regretted their decision.
