Indonesian Race Horse

Intro

Bred almost exclusively for racing the Indonesian Race Horse is a cross between local Sandalwood Pony crossed with Thoroughbred.

Origins

This cross was an attempt to increase speed and size of the local ponies, and development began in 1975. Adding Thoroughbred blood doesn’t always improve a sturdy breed and often produces animals not well suited for the rugged geography of island life. While small, they tend to favor the Thoroughbred characteristics and are considered light saddle horses.

Perhaps that is the reason they are considered at risk and in 2010 there were only 144 left. Although as racehorses can win money, those left are likely well-kept.
