Sandalwood Pony

Intro

Also called Sandelhoutpaard, Soemba, Sumbanese, Sumba and Sandal, the Sandalwood Pony is named for sandalwood which is one of Indonesia’s main exports. They come from the islands of Sumba and Sumbawa in Indonesia.

Origins

Almost all of the Indonesian pony breeds are descendants of Chinese or Mongolian animals, giving them a sturdy foundation. Over the centuries, islands traded animals and imports from outside the country were brought in from time to time. Today strains found on each island have developed localized characteristics that separate them from each other and the mainland breeds that spawned them.

Among the finest of Indonesian pony breeds, the Sandalwood and carries a higher concentration of Arabian and Thoroughbred blood than most. This is a small pony, but a quick one as well and is often ridden in local island bareback races at 2 to 3 mile distances.
