Catalan Horse

Intro

Now extinct, the Catalan horse is an ancestor of today’s Catalan Pyrenean horse. This was a breed of saddle horse that was bred specifically in Catalonia, from where they get their name.

Origins

The origins of this breed are unclear, but they were notable for their calm demeanor and robust body. While some of their genetics live on in the modern Pyrenean, it is a more massive type then the original. They were likely bred into extinction during the early 20th century.

Luckily, there is an attempt to re-create these interesting bloodlines using a small herd of animals which exemplify Catalan horse characteristics.
