Chestnut coloring can be found in almost every horse breed on the planet and some cultures regard this color to be the strongest and fittest of them all.

Basic Chestnut

Although we can’t testify to the truth of the legend above, there are some breeds who are prized for fiery red coats. Chestnut is one of the base colors and perhaps the most common of all horse colors. Unlike the black and grey breeds, many of the chestnut breeds weren’t created by natural selection, they were created by mankind through selective breeding.

Golden Days

The horses that originally come from the Czech Republic are primarily of warmblood type, robust & sturdy yet athletic and intelligent. In fact, The Golden Horse of Kinsky was Europe’s first warmblood sport horse. Sadly this once popular animal is now far more rare than gold.

The Horses of Józef Brandt

Józef Brandt was a Polish painter during the late 19th and early 20th centuries who was particularly celebrated for his battle scenes. The Frederic Remington of Poland, Brandt was an incredibly prolific artist who managed to tell a story with every painting.

Not Much Info

Like many of the non-English artists, I don’t possess the language skills to learn much about Brandt. However, I did discover that he was talked out of being an engineer by Juliusz Kossok and he later started an art school in Munich for young Polish artists.

Grey Horse Breeds


Grey can be found in a very large proportion of modern horse breeds. However, like black breeds, there are a few which are known specifically for their gloriously grey coat.

Horse of a Different Color

While I love almost all horse colors equally, I have to admit that grey may be among the most interesting of the lot. A grey horse is generally born with color (can be almost any color of the horse rainbow), but their coat is affected by a grey modifier. This means that with every shedding there is more and more grey hair in their coat, slowly making them lighter and lighter until they go almost pure white.
