The Unknown

The caption under the video says: “A dialogue between equestrian theater and digital art.” What does that mean? I have no idea. Do I like it? I’m not really sure. I think it is trying to tell the story of mankind’s relationship with the equine animal, but that end bit leaves me feeling a bit unsettled.

This show tours all over Europe & the UK and shares the magical world of horses. Using a variety of breeds and types…even donkeys. Generally I’m not a big fan of circus type animals on show, but I’m hoping this is a little different…I mean, look at their animals, they are magnificent!

The Horses of Adam Frans van der Meulen

Adam Frans van der Meulen was a Flemish Baroque painter during the 17th century and was perhaps most well known for his battle scenes.

Equine Focus

Frans van der Meulen’s art focused on horses in landscapes and because of this he was quickly recommended for (and given the job of) battle painter for Louis XIV of France. Although I can’t say I’m a huge fan of his art, I can appreciate the level of detail involved in each of his subjects and the stout bodied, flowing maned mounts of his calvary units.

When it comes to horse breeding, the Danish are meticulous and it’s clear the equine world actually learned a thing or two from them. The handsome Frederiksborg breed is the oldest pedigreed domestic animal in the world and was traditionally used as a royal riding mount.

Snow Polo

Click to see VideoHonestly I didn’t even know this sport existed, but I guess cold countries want to play polo too. Polo in general is a part of the equine industry that I know next to nothing about.

Good or Bad?

While it looks like it could be great fun, (on grass or snow) this is a game that also seems like it’s incredibly hard on the animal. As I spend more time writing about animals I’m coming to believe that using them as professional athletes isn’t very fair to them.
