Horse Job – Racetrack Judge

man standing at a racetrack

In the early racing days there were multiple racing judges used to decide the winner of each race. As can be expected, that became a matter of too many cooks in the kitchen and it was difficult to get unanimous results.

Thanks to technology and fast cameras, the judging process can be more exact and carried out by only one individual, although there are cases of disputed judge calls being overturned. This horse job does not provide a great deal of contact with the animals.

A Knowledge of Racing

This is a position which benefits from a thorough knowledge of the racing industry, firm decision making capabilities and the ability to stand by their calling, as well as a knowledge of horseflesh.

The Best Jumper Course Ever

This video celebrates teamwork in style. Herve Godignon and his amazing mount Calypso work some serious magic on these jumps. This is by far one of the coolest and most elaborate jumper courses I’ve ever seen and the round couldn’t be more brilliant.

Definitely worth a watch – you’ll be inspired.

The Horses of Salvador Dali

While largely celebrated for his surreal artwork, when Salvador Dali studied art in Barcelona and Madrid he dabbled in a number of artistic styles.

Interestingly enough, his surreal work was partly inspired by the writings of Sigmund Freud about the significance of subconscious imagery.

Dali’s Horses

Being Spanish, his obvious love of horses makes perfect sense. Horses often make an appearance in his art. So many in fact that I couldn’t fit them all in this post.

I selected a variety of styles to show here, some of which may surprise you.

Where I am
Currently, I’m living in Portland, Oregon

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I’m a bit of a world traveler—haven’t really stuck around in one place for too long. I like to think it’s because I’m adventuresome, but it’s really got more to do with my dad’s job.

By the time I was five years old, I was living in Jakarta, and had traveled to Bali, Lombok, and Komodo Island. Other places I’ve lived include Singapore and England. But what really brings out the thrill-seeker in me is photography.

Horse Pictures From Barbados

Barbados flag
Horse cultures can be found in all corners of the globe and it’s important that we preserve them. The onslaught of mechanization during the 20th century redefined our relationship with this noble animal. We want to celebrate all horse cultures of he world, even if we find some of them disagreeable.

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from
I’m a Canadian of Austrian decent. Horses became a factor in my life the day I first saw one on television while in the hospital as a small child with mobility issues.

I wasn’t able to walk at the time and when I saw my first horse on a broadcast of a parade I was struck hard and fast. My logic was simple; if I couldn’t walk, I wanted to ride.

Animal-Friendly Fabric Softener

Horse laying down
Recently it has come to my attention that some popular fabric softeners are not very animal-friendly. In fact, many of them coat the fibers of your fabrics with rendered animal fat to make them soft. In short, fabric softener is part of the reason horses are being slaughtered in this country.

Abstract Horse

Horse macro

Image from nealpage

Taking a week off of horse jobs to do something unexpected and fun on a Monday. I’ve always been a big fan of photography, (horses in specific) but some of the horse photographers I’ve featured have given me a whole new view of horse images.

I did some searching and tracked down fantastic shots that show an abstract side of the equine animal.
