The Horses of Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland in 1853, his father was a pastor so he was raised in a religious environment. Vincent was a high strung and self-conscious youth.

Happiness From Beauty

He decided to become an artist in 1880 after suffering a few failed relationships and and unsuccessful stint as a preacher in a Belgian mining town. He began his artistic studies in Belgium with the intention of inspiring happiness by creating beauty.

A Few Tokens

Although it is clear that horses were not one of his favorite subjects, they did make a guest appearance in his work now and then. Here are a few examples of how Van Gogh saw horses.

Horse Pictures From Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan flag
Horse cultures can be found in all corners of the globe and it’s important that we preserve them. The onslaught of mechanization during the 20th century redefined our relationship with this noble animal. We want to celebrate all horse cultures of he world, even if we find some of them disagreeable.

Home At Last Sanctuary

I’ll always be interested in helping promote those who do good things for horses and almost any rescue or sanctuary falls under that category. This week I’m pleased to present a guest post by Donna over at the Home At Last Sanctuary about their establishment.

Jim & DonnaJim and I are retired educators and we both faced and survived life threatening issues- breast cancer for me and a terrible auto accident for Jim. In 2004 to celebrate our recoveries we decided to get a mule. We had horses in our younger days, but it had been over 20 years since we had them.

How We Started

We found a mule- May Belle- at The Sunshine Sanctuary in Los Molinas CA. When May Belle arrive she came with two surprises- Jessie, another mule, and Sweet, a Kiger mustang. We were thrilled. Within a few weeks we started getting calls about taking old, injured or unwanted horses.

The Horse Boy by Rupert Isaacson

horse-boy1Recently I was contacted by Fran Jurga about an interesting new book that is worth checking out called The Horse Boy by Rupert Isaacson.

The Background

This is a true story of Mr. Isaacson’s son, Rowan who was diagnosed with autism, a condition which made communication with him almost impossible. An encounter with the neighbor’s horse became a shining moment which helped to pull Rowan out of his shell and improve his condition.

The Story

This enlightened moment inspired Rupert to take his son to the steppes of Mongolia, where horses have long been an ingrained and spiritual part of everyday life. There they hoped to consult shamans for help with Rowan’s condition.

Horse Boy is the story of the Isaacson family’s adventure in Mongolia, their trials and tribulations as they wander the landscape of autism and find a connection with nature. Absolutely without a doubt going to be a tearjerker.

Surprise, AZ

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I grew up as a child in Montana, and attribute these early memories as the reason for my subject matter. My Art degree is in Computer Animation/Photography. It is here that I fell in love with the camera and how to “show” the story. Eventually I found myself wanting more independence and creativity, and a friend suggested I look into the Fine Art side. This is when I took up oils.

Horse Job – Racetrack Vet

Group of people standing around a horse

A racetrack vet is a veterinarian that specializes in racehorses and is often employed by large racetracks or stable owners to provide dedicated service to the animals at that facility. Like any veterinarian, this is a position which requires a great deal of schooling and certification.

What You Need

This is a position which benefits from strength of character, the ability to handle high stress situations and an intense knowledge of the equine animal inside and out. Being a horse doctor can be a tough job with plenty of ups and downs, not just dealing with sick animals, but distressed owners and racing trainers.

A great deal of required schooling and certification, the ability to work quickly under intense pressure and a strong bond with horses in general are traits of a successful racetrack vet.

How To Fit A Bridle

Last weeks video was all about fitting a saddle so it only seems appropriate that this week we round it out by discussing how to fit a bridle.

It is important that all tack you use fits your horse properly, ill-fitting equipment can cause a number of problems – many of which keep you out of the saddle. Be sure to brush up on your bridle terminology so you know your subject matter first.
