I was born and raised in Austria, in a small village in the lakes district of Salzburger Land. After Culinary school I emigrated to the States. I had a successful career as a chef, pastry chef and chocolatier.

Norway FlagThe end of the week is a great time to visit another exotic location and learn about the unique horse breeds it’s given rise to. Looking at each breed in the context of their origins is a fascinating ride, & today a peek at the breeds from Norway.

Old & Cold

The breeds from Norway tend to be rather old and similarly unique ones. The first example would have to be the Døle Gudbrandsdal, one of the smallest cold blooded trotters on the planet. Relatively new on the books, the Døle’s bloodlines are thought to date back somewhere between 400 – 800 BC. Today they are protected and controlled by the government.

Athletic Champ

The Netherlands are in the north so many of their breeds tend toward the more robust side. Originally they bred two similar types of athletic horse, the Gelderland (a coach horse with natural jumping ability) & the Groningen a charming riding horse with stylish action. More recently the Dutch Warmblood was developed and the two breeds were absorbed into a warmblood registry.

The Big Debate

When it comes to the start of it all, Morocco has a heavy hitter in the horse world. There is a debate about whether Barb or Arabian bloodlines came first and if they are, in fact, connected at all. Both breeds exhibit wildly different characteristic dominant traits, which they tend to pass on. The Barb is more solidly built for mountainous desert climates and credited as the foundation for the mighty Iberian breeds.

That’s One BIG Gymnast

Every time I watch it I just feel worse for the poor horse, he just got spooked and there was this fence in his way, so he decided to jump it…he just didn’t get those forelegs quite high enough to clear the hurdle. The men seem to just stand there, stunned.
