I bred my black/white paint stallion (his off side is almost competely roan on the black spots) to my red dun sabino mare and the colt (at almost a year now) looks like he will be a red roan. Could this be possible?

yeah that’s possible. if one or both the parents have the roan gene, they could have passed it on to the colt. you could have them genetically tested for roan(requires a hair sample w/ roots)to see if they have the color gene. the colt could also be a minimal white sabino that appears roan.

    Hi,
Thank you for the photos and info.

I’m trying to write a blog about the appy I had, OMG, 35 years ago!

Unfortunately, I don’t have any pics of her. I know that she was a roan, people told me she was strawberry, but now that I’m older and the internet is available, I don’t think strawberry suits her.

My memory is that she was purple. I thought that she was the most awesome looking horse, unlike anyone else’s in the neighborhood.

I grew up in Norco, CA, i.e. suburban ranches. LOL.

Thank you for helping me with my education and reliving my youth.

    You are Joy!
    Joyfully,
    Janet

    Paige,

Thank you for getting back to me 🙂

I had actually gone to the site you referred, prior to coming to yours :O

I do agree with you, she was probably a blue roan. 😀

How can you tell from the look at the 8 month old foal if it’s a blue roan or grey? It has black main and tail, black legs and face, and grey body right now. The dam is grey, buy sire is red roan, thats what weird. Would foal have a red hair later? Or it will be a blue roan or grey?

Milana – sounds like your foal will be a grey like its dam from what you’ve said, but hard to know until its a yearling or more usually. Although it could also be a roan (inheriting the roan gene separately from the sire) and the base colour could be from the dam, assuming she was dark grey originally.

I wonder if anyone has any ideas regarding my delemma:

I have been trying with limited success to work out what my little miniature is – colour-wise that is. He is white with white mane and tail, grey muzzle. Born white I believe – I got him at 5mths old and he was white then. He has since sired a “blue roan” (although I would say ‘black roan’) to a mare who doesn’t have any roaning herself (a silver black/chocolate dapple) – therefore he must be a roan. But white? His father looked identical and was called blue roan as well. I wonder if although he evidently carries a black base gene, going on his skin tones, that he may carry two creams? Is there such a thing as a double-cream roan? I know double creams with black bases exist, but am hesitant to put “classic cream champagne” or “smoky cream” to him with limited knowledge of his genetic background. He has also produced a beautiful creamy-taupe splashed foal to this mare, (not possible unless he has cream genes I believe).

He has also produced a beautiful creamy-tobiano and a rich brown-tobiano. To a rich brown-tobiano mare.
