Bay or Yellow Dun Horses

A look at yellow dun horses around the world and on a variety of different breeds.

Perhaps the most common shade of dun, yellow dun comes from the dun dilution on a bay base. This, along with wildtype bay are thought to be an ancestral coloring and often found on wild horses. Their coat can range from a light creamy yellow to a deep reddish gold. Mane, tail, points and primitive markings remain very dark. This combination can often be confused with a buckskins, which are different genetically. The one surefire way to visually identify a dun is their dorsal stripe.
