A look at wildtype bay horses around the world and on a variety of different breeds.
Wildtype bays are considered true bays and this color, along with the dun dilution is thought to be an ancestral one. Commonly found in wild horses, wildtype can be visually identified by their striking leg markings, which only extend up to the pastern or fetlock joints, sometimes causing vertical striping. Their soft spots can be lighter, which could come from the pangare modifier or could be another effect of the A+ allele which produces it.
