Among the most common shade of chestnut, ranging from bold flaming red to a more toned down copper color. Mane and tail color can also range from very light to very dark. Red chestnut horses can be affected by the cream dilution which produces a golden palomino; the flaxen modifier which lightens mane and tail hair to white; and the champagne dilution creating a gold champagne. All of the above can also be confused with silver bay when accompanied by a flaxen mane and tail, but they are all different genetically.
