The Elephant Characters of Auguste Vimar

Auguste Vimar Elephant IllustrationToday I’m going to switch it up and post about something other than horses. Although they are my favorite, I’m an animal (and art) lover in general and fancy most things with fur & four legs.

By Chance

I ran across these drawings the other day and was absolutely blown away by them. Auguste was a 19th century French illustrator, most recognized for his illustrations of children’s publications. Mr. Vimar drew other animals too, but it’s clear he had a thing for elephants & I collected my favorites to share. The illustrations below are from a book titled Le Boy de Marius Bouillabès (if anyone’s interested).

Antique Horse

Antique Horse

Image from Jason Pier in DC

Lately I’ve been looking for more of the unusual where horse art is concerned, and recently I’ve featured everything from embroidery to fun old postcards. Since I threw my posting schedule out the window (literally) I’ve been exploring my creative side.

On The Road

One of my guilty television pleasures is Antiques Roadshow, so I decided to go on a virtual equine roadshow of my own in the hopes of finding some cool equestrian theme antiques to share. Horses have always made popular toys & the majority of what I found probably made youngsters somewhere very happy. They are very different of the bright, plastic horse toys of today aren’t they?

Buckskin And Dun Are Not The Same Thing

Two horse colors that are perhaps the most commonly mistaken for one another are buckskin & dun. However there is a world of difference between the two and although a similar coloration they come from completely different genetics.

Golden Horses

Both dun & buckskin can be a golden colored body with a black mane, tail & legs. The body color can range from a light, creamy tan to a deep, rich gold. Both of them stem from a different dilution gene on a bay animal, so it’s easy to see the confusion. I probably say this about all of them, but I do love this coloring.

The Care Section Has Been Updated

General CareLately I’ve been on a mission to get older sections of the site updated with new copy & graphics. The breeds section was a huge project that took months to complete so other parts need attention.

Section of the Week

Today I’m proud to announce that I’ve given my care section a new face & I’m hoping it’s easier to navigate and use. This section features general tips, info about horse feed, a general layout of ownership costs, tips for stabling your horse and a guide to plants your horse shouldn’t eat.

Borat at Hampton Classic Horse Show

Click to see VideoI must admit, I find Borat absolutely hilarious and in fact I think that Sacha Baron Cohen is a comical genius.

That said, he can be an acquired taste, but this clip is too funny not to share if you give it a chance. Not a part of his Borat movie, this is a clip from when he was just a lowly television star in the UK.

Remember as you are watching that his humor is cynical and wholly tongue in cheek. It’s truly amazing just how patient & impatient the woman is with him as he rambles on.

If you haven’t met the rest of the alphabet, be sure to do so A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H. Today it’s about breeds that begin with I, from the robust Ibérian Warmblood a larger, more athletic Ibérian animal to the lightning fast Italian Trotter that have made a racing name for themselves worldwide.

Horse Breeds Threatened With Extinction

Threatened BreedsWriting about so many different breeds has been a real education, not just about horses but about the road we’ve traveled on their back. In doing that I’ve earned an even larger appreciation for an animal I’ve loved my entire life.

Is Your Horse a Threatened Breed?

Every single breed is important for the contributions they have made and we have a responsibility to these animals whose numbers are so low. Be sure to take a look at animals with even lower numbers from the critical list as well.
