Writing about so many different breeds has been a real education, not just about horses but about the road we’ve traveled on their back. In doing that I’ve earned an even larger appreciation for an animal I’ve loved my entire life.
Is Your Horse a Threatened Breed?
Every single breed is important for the contributions they have made and we have a responsibility to these animals whose numbers are so low. Be sure to take a look at animals with even lower numbers from the critical list as well.
‘Threatened’ means these breeds have less than 500 active breeding mares worldwide. Thankfully, this is a pretty short list.
The Whole Threatened List
This is the most up-to-date & comprehensive list I could find, but if anyone has any knowledge of more threatened breeds or any that are recovering I hope you’ll let me know in the comments below.
Horse Breeds
Canadian Horse
A hardy breed that has been bred since the 17th century in Canada & recognized as a national treasure.
Hackney Horse
Although their origins are disputed, flashy, handsome trotters have been bred in England since the Middle Ages.
Lipizzan
Carries the noble blood of the ancient Iberian horse and makes its home at the oldest riding academy in the world.
Sadly More To Come…
I feel sure that this list is missing animals of Asian & African descent & will be on the lookout for better information. If anyone can tell me where to find it, please speak up in the comments below! 🙂
We are presently working on more information and pictures for your Nokota article, thank you much, as they definitely number well under 500 mares, and the more attention and opportunities we can bring them the more secure their future.
The Lac La Croix Indian Pony is listed as CRITICAL (critically endangered) on Canada’s Conservation List published by Rare Breeds Canada.
For more information on this breed, please contact me at the info above or at the breed society – Lac La Croix Indian Pony Society – http://www.laclacroixindianpony.com – Thank you. Jane
The Lipizzan is endangered? I had no idea….certainly they too are working on correcting that. No species of horse should disappear.
