Horse Pictures From Peru

Peru flag
Horses are very much a part of Peruvian life – both in urban and rural settings. The urban animals are often over worked, under fed and kept in appalling conditions.

Their rural cousins however, while they earn their keep, tend to live a healthier, more well-nourished lifestyle. If only because they have more forage available to them.

Mountain horses live in unforgiving conditions and grow to be incredibly hardy.

Proposed Wild Horse and Burrow Act HR 1018 Revisions

Mustangs at play

Issues surrounding wild horses are becoming more and more mainstream thanks to people like Madeleine Pickens and Deanne Stillman who work hard to publicize the injustices these animals face.

What They Want To Do

Currently a legislation has been proposed to update the sorely outdated Wild Horse & Burrow Protection Act of 1971 HR 1018.

These amendments were introduced on Feb 2009 and propose updating aspects of the bill that deal with horse handling, preservation, round up, land management and adoption (they are paraphrased below).

Horse Buddies

Horse Buddies

Of course it is fitting that of all of the animals out there, horses like their own kind the best. They seem to genuinely form affectionate bonds with one another and are known to become depressed should they be separated or should one pass away.

Horse Jobs – Breeding Manager

Smiling man petting a horse
A career in breeding management is not one for the faint of heart. Aside from the decidedly lewd nature of the job itself, this field is as physically demanding as it is economically challenging. This is a position people often find themselves in without planning for it.

Not An Easy Job

Horse breeding requires managing excited and emboldened stallions all the way to cranky gestating mares. And understanding the complicated nature of reproductive cycles and pregnancy needs. Anyone in this position has to have a genuine love of the animal.

This is a postion which benefits from strict attention to detail, strength of character and an innate sense of dedication to animal rights.

Good business sense, practical horse knowledge and endless patience are a requirement for becoming a successful breeding manager.

Picthall and Gunzi Horse Books

Picthall & Gunzi Horse BookAttention horse photographers, last week I recieved an email from Katy over at Picthall & Gunzi which is a UK based children’s book publisher.

They produce educational books worldwide for children between the ages of 0-10 years old. Their books are designed to be educational, to encourage learning, and to be entertaining to children.

Looking for Photographers

They are currently looking into designing several horse and pony related books including a sticker activity book, a board book, and a fold out poster book.

Katy contacted me about using some of the images on theequinest, so I offered to publish her request and see if any of the photographers would be interested in submitting their work directly.

Video – Animals in Sign Language

It’s interesting to learn words in different languages, and sign language is no exception. I know a bit of ASL and, believe it or not, that has come in handy from time to time.

Learn A New Language

I encourage everyone to learn the basic alphabet in both American Sign Language and British Sign Language (hey you never know when you’ll need it). They are very different from one another.

The first video below was just too cute to pass up. He is 2 and his mom is deaf – let him teach you how to sign some common animals. (If his horse isn’t clear enough for you, try this horse example for clarification). The second shows common animals in BSL – by a more experienced teacher.

Origami Unicorns

Origami Unicorn

Image from origami_madness

I am often surprised by how seriously people take their origami, the masters can create some really amazing pieces.

Not Just The Chinese

Although the origins are traced to China, there are independent paper folding traditions found in some European countries as well.

When I start looking for images I find them from global locations and everything from quick and simple to elaborate, detailed works of paper art.

I Can’t Do It

It is truly amazing how a flat sheet of paper can become a beautiful unicorn in motion by just folding in the right places. I know I’ve tried my hand at folding (horses of course). About 20 frustrated minutes and 20 sheets of wasted paper later, I’m not ashamed to say I gave up.
