Video – Animals in Sign Language

It’s interesting to learn words in different languages, and sign language is no exception. I know a bit of ASL and, believe it or not, that has come in handy from time to time.

Learn A New Language

I encourage everyone to learn the basic alphabet in both American Sign Language and British Sign Language (hey you never know when you’ll need it). They are very different from one another.

The first video below was just too cute to pass up. He is 2 and his mom is deaf – let him teach you how to sign some common animals. (If his horse isn’t clear enough for you, try this horse example for clarification). The second shows common animals in BSL – by a more experienced teacher.

Origami Unicorns

Origami Unicorn

I am often surprised by how seriously people take their origami, the masters can create some really amazing pieces.

Not Just The Chinese

Although the origins are traced to China, there are independent paper folding traditions found in some European countries as well.

When I start looking for images I find them from global locations and everything from quick and simple to elaborate, detailed works of paper art.

I Can’t Do It

It is truly amazing how a flat sheet of paper can become a beautiful unicorn in motion by just folding in the right places. I know I’ve tried my hand at folding (horses of course). About 20 frustrated minutes and 20 sheets of wasted paper later, I’m not ashamed to say I gave up.

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come
from?

I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I was raised on a tobacco farm, but my mother always had horses. When the tobacco went (thankfully) my mother started boarding, training and giving lessons. My sister works with my mother too.

I have always had horses in my life. I started out riding western, because way back then, nobody around here rode English. About 1972 my mother bought her first English saddle for the monumental price of $200 (I still don’t think my dad knows how much she spent.)

Would You Jump Sidesaddle?

Jumping Sidesaddle

Image from equusasdie

The addition of Riding Aside to my RSS collection got me to thinking about riding sidesaddle and why it scares me so. It just seems so strange to sit on a horse and not actually be astride it.

Something About it Freaks Me Out

I think it looks very pretty, but don’t imagine I will be trying it anytime soon. Thankfully now I can read all about it.

Riding sidesaddle may be one thing, but jumping is another thing entirely. Instantly the idea gives me the jitters, simply because balance is an essential element in jumping. And how can both legs on one side truly be balanced?

The part of me that always wonders if I remembered to tighten the girth just won’t allow me to try it.

What do you see as the biggest problem facing the farrier industry today?
I’d have to say the lack of of the truth and missing information. I call it the old school methods still in practice. I’m sure we would almost all unanimously agree that Farrier’s themselves can be a breed apart and many times not easy to deal with when it comes to questioning them about their methods of shoeing. Horse Jobs – Equine Nutrition Specialist

man with a bucket of feed

Equine nutritionists are an important part of the horse spectrum and have an innate ability to understand health. This isn’t a particularly hands on career, while there is horse contact, the majority of work is in research and testing.

What You Need

Nutritionists work in many different environments and with a variety of different types of people. They can be responsible for communication with owners, manufacturers, dealers and even farmers. Anyone in this position has to enjoy meeting new people and seeing new places. This is a position which benefits from an aptitude for math and computers, strong communication skills and an inquisitive nature.

A genuine love of biology, a problem solving nature and a love of the outdoors are strong characteristics in a good equine nutrition specialist.
