Bay Mealy or Pangaré Horses

A look at bay mealy horses around the world and on a variety of different breeds.

The mealy gene is expressed by a lightening of the soft spots, generally the muzzle, belly, flank, elbow and eyes. The combination of pangaré on a bay base is perhaps the most common and often found on wild horses. This may be tied to ancestral colors and is often associated with wildtype bay. On the darker end, they could be mistaken for a seal brown but a mealy bay can usually be visually identified by their characteristic lightened muzzle, which can be quite dramatic on a bay coat.
