The Story of Leonardo’s Horse

Leonardo da Vinci is arguably one of the most amazing artists that ever lived…he also had a thing for horses. An anatomy and engineering buff, Leonardo undertook a massive project with his grand horse statue.

An Incomplete Masterpiece

With all of his talent, Leonardo was easily bored and had trouble completing projects. Interestingly enough, he worked on the horse for 17 years but was only able to create a 24 foot clay model that was to be cast in bronze. A project of this size was a huge undertaking, especially in the 15th century and seemed to capture his attention from both an artistic & an engineering perspective.

There is a lot of controversy among the Western horse world around Mongolian horse practices. Horse meat and milk has sustained their culture for centuries & their races, while brutal, hone centuries old skills and keep their stock strong.

I Don’t Have To Agree

While I will never try horse meat and am not interested in racing a horse until it drops under me, I don’t feel I’m in a position to judge their culture. These practices have been in place since long before the US was around and will continue until the ‘civilized world’ catches up to them. Until then there is something remote and intense about their lifestyle that embodies a spirit that perhaps us westerners will never understand.

Icelandic Horses in The Wintertime

There is something a little magical about the Icelandic Horse. Their physical isolation makes them one of the purest breeds on the planet & that’s a real accomplishment.

Iceland is not the most hospitable place so often images of them are set in an isolated and dramatic landscape. This video is no different but the animals seem to instantly warm their environment with their frosty breaths and colorful fur coats. The video is a little slow to start, but the horse shots are worth the wait.

A Close Up View of The White Horse of Uffington

The White Horse of Uffington is the oldest of the Wiltshire white horses and has long been a mystery. Although it’s roots are believed to date back to around 800 – 1200 BC no one knows why it was created.

This is probably my favorite of the Wiltshire white horses, partly because it’s so mysterious and partly because I love it’s more stylized lines and primitive look.

Before you even get on a horse there are a number of lessons you must learn, how to halter, lead, groom and of course tie them. Often times the most basic lessons are the most important, so pay attention!

Safety has to be considered at all times around large animals like horses. When spooked they have a tendency to run or lash out first & ask questions later. So regardless of what you are doing, you need to consider their (& your own) safety first. Tying properly is particularly important because when a tied horse spooks they can seriously injure themselves.
