I know some horse lovers take offense when this topic is broached. However I’m of the opinion that if you aren’t a vegan yourself, then you can’t say much about what other people eat. Kumis isn’t any less natural than drinking cows milk.
The video goes into a little about kumis, what it is, how its made and who drinks it. Essentially kumis is fermented mares milk…sounds distasteful to most westerners, but it’s been a staple of many equestrian cultures for centuries.

This is one of those that falls under the category ‘So Strange I Had to Share’. It’s just a horse, wandering around being a horse…only this horse is doing it inside someone’s unfurnished house.
Needless to say, the animal looks decidedly out of place in the house, no matter how beautiful it is. Although clearly the video is actually just about a horse inside a room, I still kept waiting for a punchline. I kept thinking the house’s owner was going to come home to an interesting surprise. No such luck.

Todays video is a three part documentary about a Montana horse training farm. I haven’t had time to watch the entire thing so will be viewing it along with readers when it publishes. It appears to be a look at American horse culture.
When I think of Montana I think of ranch country, rolling hills, cows and, of course, cowboys. Err, or should I say cowgirls? Either way, this is an interesting look at a state I’ve never been to.

This weeks video is a fun glimpse into a world I don’t know much about, the world of Connemara Ponies. This is a sturdy breed that is known for it’s handsome looks, athletic ability and good nature.
There isn’t a whole lot to this video aside from some Irish music and a lot of horses, but it is a fun way to get a closer look at the breed type. I’ve always been more of a big horse kind of girl, but these ponies are like big horses trapped in a pony’s body!

Needles make me cringe, but sometimes they are a necessary evil when it comes to horses. While I don’t recommend everyone go around administering their own shots, it’s something every horse person should really know.
The best person to learn from is your vet and chances are they have to give your horse shots from time to time. Get involved, ask questions and learn how to do it with qualified help. Chances are your vet will be glad you are responsible and teach you what they can.

Ok, you’re not going to like this…but there is no other way. Seasoned horse people will chuckle over the reactions of novices until the end of time. Remember, there is a first time for everything and it’s pretty amazing what horse ownership can get you used to.
Perhaps the best things my trainer ever gave me was a piece of colorful string and a clothespin. It’s a handy trick every horse owner should know. Tie one end of the string to the thermometer and the other end to the clothespin. When taking temperatures simply clip the clothespin onto the top of the tail to ensure your thermometer never goes missing.

Who doesn’t love a good balloon animal from time to time? Whether you want to make them for your horse crazed daughter’s birthday party or simply to amuse your horse pals, this is a fun trick to know.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m willing to bet it’s more difficult than it looks…there is more than one video involved. Each video teaches a step you need to follow to learn the process. I’m tempted to run out right now and buy a bag of balloons so I can start practicing!

As the summer starts to heat up and grass grows taller, ticks start to become a problem. Not just for your and your horse, but for all of your furry friends.
Lyme disease is just one of the yucks that ticks spread, but it’s a serious one so it’s important to be aware of general symptoms. As always, you know your horse the best, so you know when something is amiss – if your animal starts to act strange and you suspect they are ill call your vet right away.

Last week I shared some videos of one extreme equine sport, vaulting and suddenly I felt a series coming on. Today I’m going for water sports (as beach season is almost upon us) with horse surfing.
Yes, I said it – horse surfing. No the horse isn’t in the water, they keep all four feet firmly on the ground. However, the guy behind them on the board holding on to a rope for dear life is another matter entirely. There is also a winter sport with the same idea, (a post for another day) which only proves that people on horseback manage to get bored all over the world. Again I’ve opted for a few videos to help provide more of the experience.

Cowboy Chris is heading on a long ride, a very long ride. Chris Blethen is riding from Dallas to New York to raise awareness for children’s cancer research at Heroes For Children. Could it be true…could cowboys really still exist?
Chris is a cancer survivor and horse lover who wanted to do something he loves to make a statement. He uses several horses for his journey and rides them in turns, leading the others behind. I’m guessing he relies heavily on local hospitality everywhere he goes and that’s pretty cool. You can follow his journey in real time on this map to see when he’ll be coming through an area near you. Be sure to go out and show him your support if he’s headed your direction!
