Before you even get on a horse there are a number of lessons you must learn, how to halter, lead, groom and of course tie them. Often times the most basic lessons are the most important, so pay attention!
Tying Safely
Safety has to be considered at all times around large animals like horses. When spooked they have a tendency to run or lash out first & ask questions later. So regardless of what you are doing, you need to consider their (& your own) safety first. Tying properly is particularly important because when a tied horse spooks they can seriously injure themselves.

Think Like a Horse
It serves every horse owner well to remember that equines are animals of prey. Simply put, that means they run when they feel threatened, always plan accordingly.
Yep, and also if you’re walking towards your horse and he/she starts running away, it might be because you’re walking directly behind her/him. It’s because horses are prey animals and most of their predators would approach them from behind, but another horse would approach him/her diagonally, so that’s how you would probably do it too.
