South Africa Vlaamperd

Intro

The South African Vlaamperd comes from the western Cape Region of South Africa. Their name translates to “Flemish Horse” referring to their strong initial Friesian influence. This Flemish heritage provides them a defining characteristic, a beautiful black coat (although mares may be dark seal).

Origins

Established in 1983, they were developed as a light draft or harness horse that also made a good mount. The Vlaamperd foundation were Dutch Friesians, with various infusions of local breeds, including the now-extinct Cape Horse. Later, infusions of East-Friesian, Oldenburg and Cleveland Bay found their way into the bloodlines as well.

According to the DAD-IS, the Vlaamperd is critical and as of 2025 there were between 228-280 left, which is good news, as it’s up from numbers in 2023.
