Namaqua Pony

Intro

Also known as the South African or African Pony, the Namaqua Pony came from the Namaqua district of South Africa and is now extinct.

Origins

Smaller than many of the breeds developed in South Africa, this pony has ties to the Basotho Pony. There isn’t much reliable information about this breed other than they were developed early in the 19th century from Cape Horses. The Cape was a large breed, so they were likely crossed with the hardy ponies bred by the Basotho tribes, producing a smaller animal with horse characteristics.
