Origins
The M’Bayar is a pony that comes from the Baol region of Senegal and is the most numerous of the types found in the nation.
and is thought to have evolved from the mighty Barb.
Origins
There are no centralized breeding programs in the nation, so ‘breeds’ are largely based on the area and type of an animal. It is possible the M’Bayar Horse is native to the area, or it could be a localized strain of Barb from the north. During the 20th century, Barbs from Mali, Mauretania and Morocco contributed their genetics, as did some Arabian and Anglo-Arabian bloodlines.
While breeding may not be centralized, Senegal is an equestrian nation. In 1996 they had the largest horse population of any West African country.
