American Miniature – Horse Breed of The Week

American Miniature Horse

Image from extrasida

The blood of the American Miniature Horse comes from England & the Netherlands where they were used as mine horses. Their ancestors were brought to North America in the 19th century for use in the Appalachian coal mines.

The Blood of Many

The original miniature horse bloodlines come mainly from Shetland & Dartmoor ponies. However, once brought to the states, there was an attempt to refine them with Hackney, POA and Thoroughbred genetics.

Race Horses in Motion

Horse Racing

Image from Rob Ireton

Although I’m not always in agreement with the racing industry, the excitement of the races is not lost on me. There is something about the bright silks and sense of anticipation and I do have to admit, I get a thrill when the starting bell peals.

Horses in Motion

The equine is an animal of prey, and running is in their nature. Nothing about horse racing is natural, but the beauty of the animal at a full gallop, trot or pace remains.

A Moving Target

So far I’ve covered the motions of rearing, running, playing & bucking, and there are more to come.

Where I am
Fehraltorf, Switzerland

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I was born and raised in eastern Switzerland. We lived in a small town close to the regions main city St. Gallen. My parents had a restaurant and I spent my entire scool time there.

I actually dreamed of a career with horses, ‘cause in switzerland, we have horses everywhere. But my parents saw my drawing talent and were afraid I‘d throw away my future if I wouldn’t turn this gift in to an occupation.

So my mom said: ” Why don’t you try the entrance examination for art school – if you don’t succeed, you can still work with horses.”

What Color is Comanchee?

ComancheeRecently I received a comment from Juli over at HorseNet Horse Rescue asking for help determining the color of one of their rescues.

So I told her I’d post pictures of him to see if any of my readers could help her pinpoint Comanchee’s coloring.

Not Easy To Eyeball

I realize that color genetics isn’t always as it appears but thought it was worth a try. Here are a couple images of Comanchee and one more can be found on their website (scroll down and he’s the first one under the Non-Ridable animals header).
