Welcome to this week’s edition of the a-z of plants that are dangerous to your horse, as you can see we are finally getting close to the end of the alphabet. Today’s plant is fairly common & fairly common looking, which can make it more dangerous. Wintercress is pretty average-looking in every way so be sure to note its apperance.

A Little About Wintercress

Barbarea is also called Yellowrocket, Scurvy Grass & Wintercress. This is a biennial with a taproot. Leaves are long-petiolate. Flowers are yellow, have four petals & grow in clusters.

How Dangerous Is It?

This plant is really only problematic during drought conditions, it is unpalatable to horses. However it can be incorporated into hay, so feed should be checked regularly.

All parts of this plant are toxic to equines.

What To Look For

You know your animal the best, so you should know when something is amiss. Wintercress toxicity symptoms include gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea & colic.
