Taken in Toledo, Ohio, 1899, this is an image of the The Toledo Fire Department participating in a parade to honor the return of Spanish-American War soldiers from Cuba.
Why We Like It
Partly because this is simply a smashing shot for a 19th century photograph. The horses were kind and stayed still long enough for their exposure to be almost crystal clear. It’s also interesting because on the roof behind them you can see a couple of photographers snapping the scene. Likely mirror images of the person and equipment who took the image we see here. Not just for the horse lover, this is a unique look at American history.
