Racetrack Groom – Horse Jobs

Man with a horse

Often a starting off point for ambitions jockeys-to-be, a groom is one of the entry level jobs working with horses. Despite this fact, it takes a lot of grit and a serious knowledge of horses to do a great job.

What You Need

The groom wears a number of hats during a normal workday and many tasks will fall under their command. However this is a position that benefits from a solid knowledge of horses, strong communication skills and a strong teamwork ethic.

This is a horse job that requires a lot of time with the animals, a sense of personal responsibility is essential in a caretaker.

How To Dye A Saddle

Something a little different for the artistic horsey DIY crowd (especially the ones who hate the color of their saddle). Sometimes change is good.

This process isn’t strictly for saddles, almost any light colored leather can be dyed (the darker colors, a tad more difficult). Whether you want to dye your saddle, bridle or that pair of boots, this vid provides some of the basics for the process.

Just remember, dye is permanent (and messy) so make sure you wear grubby clothes & shoes.!

Mythological Horses

Mythological HorsesThere is a long list of horses in mythology and these tales come from all corners of the earth. It’s interesting to see that such a noble, beautiful animal is often portrayed as no-good.

Lately mythology has peaked my interest so I’ve been doing some research into how horses of mythology are given life. In doing that research I’ve collected quite a list from cultures worldwide and I’m attempting to look at each one in more detail.

The horses of mythology: a few of them you may know, a few of them you’ve never heard of and a few of them we should all steer clear of.

Interesting Horse RSS Feeds – Weekend Reading

Equine OnlinePart of running a successful website is keeping up with the industry which means reading horse blogs & paying attention to relevant websites.

Over the past few years of posting & using social media I have saved hundreds of URLs and if they have an RSS feed I try to keep up with their blog too.

What is RSS Anyway?

If you have heard of RSS (or not) and don’t really understand it, here is a simple explanation & a video that will clear it up.

You Gotta Love People Who Write About Horses

Recently I did some organizing and thought it was about time I gave credit to those horse bloggers & writers who I’ve followed for quite some time now. Some of them are writers, some artists, some photographers, some simply horse people with knowledge to share…the variety is what keeps things interesting.

Susan and Miss Capri – Finding the Perfect Horse

A guest post by Kelly over at Equestrian National Valley Institute. This is the story of a woman and her (lucky) search for the perfect horse.
Not Capri, but a pretty bay Arabian

Image from Shagya France

Before moving to Brooksville, FL and starting E.N.V.I., I taught and trained in Pinellas Park. Still new to the area, Mrs. Susan, now a beloved friend and client, decided to give me a try and hired me to find her “dream horse.”

Susan is an aspiring dressage rider who loves Arabians. She had very clear specifications. She wanted a calm, bay Arabian, who would be successful at dressage.

She also had personality specifications, as this would be her lifelong pet. What a challenge!

Weekly Breeds of the World

Heart GlobeMany of you may have noticed I’ve been doing quite a bit of work on my breeds section (if you haven’t go check it out!) because of this I’ve been introducing them to you once a week on Thursdays.

I’m going to continue to do that, but at this rate it will take me a 100 years to get through all of them so I’m stepping up my game. Starting next week I’ll be sharing three (count ’em 3) breeds a week.

The Horses of Juliusz Kossak

Seems as thought I’m on a military horse art kick, and I think the Juliusz Kossak may be my favorite so far. A Polish painter from a long line of artists, he became well known for his historical paintings & illustrations.

Childhood Influences

His personal experience growing up in Poland during the military partitions made a mark on his art although he was often commissioned for portraits as well. The battlefield was Juliusz’s specialty, he immortalized battle scenes, and did many portraits of military personnel with their mounts.

The movement & presence he captures in his work is magnificent and his attention to detail really brings his subjects to life.
