Black or Liver Chestnut Horses

A look at liver chestnut horses around the world and on a variety of different breeds.

Probably the least common of the chestnut shades, livers can look almost black in color, but will still have no actual black hair. The coat ranges from reddish brown to a deep, dark red, mane and tail are various shades of red and can differ from body color. Dark chestnut animals can be affected by the cream dilution, creating a chocolate palomino. They can also be affected by the flaxen modifier which lightens their mane and tail hair to white. Both of the above can also be confused with silver dapple if accompanied by a flaxen mane and tail, although they are quite different genetically.
