Whitmire Horse

Intro

Not an official breed, the Whitmire Horse is a strain of Cherokee Horse and part of the Spanish Colonial Horse family.

Origins

Like all horses in the Americas, Whitmire Horses are the descendants of imported animals, specifically Iberian animals imported during the 16th century. This strain was influenced by both Choctaw and Chickasaw animals.

It seems their bloodlines were almost lost at the end of the 20th century. However in 1997 a descendant of the lineage was discovered by the Cherokee Heritage Center. Considered to be critically endangered, their numbers are very low. They are generally only found in the state of Georgia, particularly in New Echota.
