Noric of Murany

Intro

The Norik muránskeho typu or Noric of Murany and they are a strain of Noriker Horse bred in the Gemer of Slovakia.

Origins

Noriker horses have long been appreciated for being a lighter, adaptable cold blooded draft type. Breeding of the Slovakian strain began in 1950 in Veľká Lúka near Murán to produce animals for army and forestry services. Before long, more breeding centers were built. Like many northern breeds, herds live outside year round, allowing nature to keep their genetics strong.

In the mid 19th century, a foundation herd of Hutsul was established, to which they added Fjord, Haflinger and Noriker blood. The goal was to create a Slovak Mountain horse with a larger frame, but maintain characteristics of the original Hutsul stock.

Today, the Noric of Murany is still bred at two farms in Dobšiná and Veľká Lúka and closely monitored. This strain is considered endangered and as of 2022 there were between 500 and 550 left.
