Mogod Pony

Intro

Also called the Tunisian, the Mogod Pony comes from the northernmost area of Tunisia and is thought to be a strain of the mighty Barb horse, refined and bred to suit the area over centuries. Sadly as machines began to replace animals in the 20th century their numbers began to dwindle.

Origins

The origins of this breed are a mystery, but they became an important element of life for the tribes found in the Mogod Mountains. Known for their strength and agility carrying heavy loads on steep mountain terrain, this is a true mountain type.

Larger breeds more suited to desert terrain have grown in popularity in the country, pushing out these native ponies. Breeding programs have been put into place to protect this robust horse.

Today they are listed as endangered in the DAD-IS and as of 2020 there were 500 left.
