Miniature Horse of Rhodes

Intro

The Rhodes Horse, Rhodian Pony or Miniature Horse of Rhodes is a small horse that is native to the island of Rhodes, from which it takes its name.

Origins

Similar to the Skyros and Cretan animals. Like most miniature horses, they are of pony size, but carry horse conformation and this breed is considered among the smallest in the world. Unfortunately they are an endangered species, but there have been efforts to save them in the 21st century.

Said to be descendants of wild horses left in Europe after the last Ice Age. They are part of a family of small horses that spread far enough to include Caspian horses. Their widespread footprint a testament to their hardy nature and ability to sustain on poor fodder.

Good Neighbors

Today there are a few left wild, mainly as a tourist attraction, with most of them domesticated so reproduction can be controlled.
