Intro
Not an official breed, Jiaoke Horses are a strain of the Hequ Horse bred in southern Gansu Province, in the northwest of China
Origins
The Hequ dates back to the T’ang Dynasty in the 7th century when they were bred by the Emperor for cavalry use. Their foundation was animals from western Asia crossed with local Tibetan stock. In the 19th century this breed was taken to the northern part of the province where the Datong Horse was used to improve it’s genetics. Today these animals are among the most numerous found in China. The Jiaoke strains is considered a small saddle horse and this type tends to be larger than the other two varieties.
