German Leutstettener Horse

Intro

Also called Sárvárer, the Leutstettener Pferd or Leutstettener Horse is a rare breed that came from the Leutstetten stud farm in Bavaria until 2006 and now is in the hands of a few private breeders. They are handsome animals which show some of the finer characteristics their foundations breeds are known for.

Origins

The foundation of the breed began at the Sárvár stud farm in Hungary using Nonius, Arabian and English Thoroughbred bloodlines. Late in the 19th century the stud changed ownership and the new owners made some updates to breeding programs. After that time only Thoroughbred and Hungarian Furioso half-bloods were bred to Sárvár mares.

Late in the 19th century, the stud again changed hands and fell under Bavarian ownership. This also brought breeding changes and after this time Furioso blood was the main influence on the breed. Sárvár horses remain a line of the Furioso breed in the Hungarian stud books.
