Ferghana Horse

Intro

Born of need, the Ferghana horse was bred to be large and robust for cavalry use.

Origins

Originating in the first millennium BC, when people of the Fergana region needed a larger horse, able to carry a man in armor. Established during the Han Dynasty, at the advent of the Silk Road. The animals found on the Asian continent are incredibly hardy, but not known for their large stature. During the time, larger animals were needed to serve the cavalry.

Horses bred in the Ferghana Valley were known as celestial horses and were coveted in a land of small types. One theory says that region exported horses to the Chinese cavalry for many years, until the breeders discontinued their exporting, starting a war. Eventually an agreement was reached and breeders agreed to send two horses a year for use of the Emperor.

Today the breed is extinct, however in 2010 an attempt was made to re-create the breed. The result was similar to the Turkoman or Akhal Teke and could fetch up to 6 million Yuan among elites.
